About the department
The Department of Environmental Engineering is the youngest at BIET, established in 2010, and has already produced a batch of environmental engineers. Thirty-three students are pursuing the master's degree here. Its faculty have expertise across diverse fields and contribute to interdisciplinary academic and research activity across the institute.
The department undertakes industrial consultancy as part of its interaction with industry. The environmental engineering laboratory carries HPLC, gas chromatography and UV-visible spectrophotometry, along with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer for heavy-metal analysis at parts-per-billion levels, and environmental biology facilities to enrich, isolate and identify microorganisms. VTU has recognised the department as a research centre; under the biomedical engineering research centre students can register for M.Sc (Engg by research) and PhD, and five research scholars are currently working. Over the last three years 25 papers have been published by scholars and faculty.

The vision of the M.Tech Programme in Environmental Engineering of our Institute is to be preeminent in creating engineering solutions for the industries, infrastructure and the environment and also to achieve national and international recognition through the impact of its research. Our vision includes our department being a collegial, collaborative and welcoming environment in which to learn and work.

Head of department

BE in civil engineering at BIET, a Master's in urban and regional planning from Mysore University in 1988 and a PhD from Kuvempu University in 2008. He joined the department of civil engineering at BIET in 1988 and is now coordinator for the M.Tech in environmental engineering and head of the environmental engineering research centre.
He has run funded projects for AICTE and others, among them the testing of some 16,000 borewell water samples across three Karnataka districts, and helped restore Kundawada Lake, a main source of drinking water for Davanagere. He consults on drinking water treatment and for sugar industries, guides three research scholars, and sits on the district expert appraisal committee under the Ministry of Environment and Forest.
