Mathematics.

Teaching the mathematics every branch depends on since 1979. A Kuvempu University research centre since 2005, with doctoral work in biomechanics and industrial modelling.

About the department

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1979, and works to give students the mathematical grounding engineering demands while keeping that teaching tied to the problems engineering actually poses. Twelve faculty teach here, seven of them with doctorates.

Kuvempu University recognised the department as a research centre on 8 April 2005, under which two candidates were awarded doctorates in mathematical modelling in biomechanics and industrial systems, supervised by Dr. K.S. Basavarajappa. VTU recognised it in turn on 25 March 2008; five candidates have since been awarded doctorates under Dr. K.S. Basavarajappa and two under Dr. N.S. Basavarajappa. Around seventy papers have been published in national and international journals, and six scholars are at work now. The thrust areas are numerical methods, differential equations, fluid and bio-fluid mechanics, statistical methods, mathematical modelling, differential geometry, contact Kahler and Finsler manifolds, graph theory and topological indices.

Our vision
To aspire the Mathematical skills of teaching and learning, prepare young minds to equip with strong fundamentals and logical tools, train them to cater the needs of solving problems in Science, Engineering and Research.

Mission

  1. 01To acquire competent mind among the faculty towards conveying best in teaching, learning and research, to develop Mathematical skills, to enhance the tools in solving Engineering problems.
  2. 02Encourage analytical, independent, rational thinking and enhance problem solving techniques of the students.
  3. 03Provide knowledge based Research and collaborate with industries to address societal Requirements.

  3. 03Able to utilize the concepts of Calculus of vectors, statistics and Probability tools and calculus of Complex variables in various Engineering situations.
  4. 04Able to apply the various Mathematical skills in preparation for a successful career in research, industry and biological systems.

M.Sc. in mathematics from Kuvempu University in 1999 and a PhD in differential geometry from the same university in 2009, with 25 years of teaching and research. He joined the institute in 2010 and has served in various capacities, including as a BOS and BOE member for VTU and Kuvempu University. He has guided two scholars to doctorates and is guiding six more under VTU, with 30 research papers published in journals of international repute and a good number of citations. He is Professor and Head, and chairs the Applied Sciences and Humanities composite Board of Studies.
