Among the very first departments, teaching from the institute's opening day in September 1979. Its independent laboratory, built in 1986, runs to 2,700 square feet.

About the department

BIET was established in the academic year 1979-80 and came into being on 1 September 1979. The Department of Physics, one of the very few earliest departments, started functioning the same day, with four senior staff from sister institutes and Prof. M.S. Devendrappa as founder faculty and head.

In the beginning it used the laboratory facilities of DRM Science College. In 1983-84 an independent laboratory was temporarily established in the workshop complex, and was later shifted to the BIET boys' hostel premises. In 1986 a complete independent laboratory, with the modern equipment needed to train engineering students and to carry out research, was established on the first floor of the Science and Textile Block across 2,700 sq ft. The staff's work shows in the results students take in both theory and laboratory subjects. Six faculty work in the department at present, two of them doctorates.

B.Sc from DRM Science College Davanagere (2004), M.Sc in nuclear physics from Kuvempu University (2006) and a PhD in physics from VTU (2016), with more than 16 years of teaching and research. His work covers crystal science, nonlinear optics, optoelectronics and nanocomposites, with more than 30 published articles, a published patent and four scholars under his guidance at VTU. He holds a grant from the Indian National Academy of Sciences under its Science Promotion Scheme, and was given the National Best Science Teacher Award by the Raman Science and Technology Foundation.

Strengths3
  • 85% of faculty in the department are doctorates.
  • Faculty members have good research collaborations with reputed institutions at national and international level.
  • Faculties have expertise in the field of Non-linear optics Nanomaterials, crystallography, for energy storage, sensing and single crystals for NLO applications and also theoretical research work on mathematical bio-modelling and department have good number of publications in high impact journals.
Weaknesses2
  • Need to improvise the research facilities (Linear optical studies, TGA/DSC, Microhardness).
  • Not having sponsored projects

  • It is planned to submit the research proposals for international collaborations for funding during the academic year 2023-24.
