About the department

The Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML) at Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET), Davangere, is established in the year 2022 with an initial intake of 60 students, which is increased to 240 from the academic year 2024–25 in response to the growing demand for AI and ML professionals. The department is dedicated to providing quality education, industry-oriented hands-on training programs in emerging technologies, hackathons, student development program research opportunities in innovative areas. Its curriculum encompasses key areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Gen AI, Agentic AI, Anthropic AI, AI with Data Science, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Audio/Video analysis using AI with ML.

The department is supported by highly qualified faculty members, well-equipped laboratories, and strong industry collaborations that enable students to gain hands-on experience through internships, projects, and technical activities. It also encourages research and innovation in advanced domains such as Deep Learning, Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Through workshops, seminars, guest lectures, and conferences, the department fosters continuous learning and prepares students to become competent professionals capable of addressing real-world challenges and contributing to technological advancements.

Dr. Mallikarjuna S B

Professor and Head

Dr. Mallikarjuna S. B. is a Professor and Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET), Davanagere and Dean Infrastructure and Planning of the Institute. He obtained his B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Government B.D.T. College of Engineering, Davangere, and his M.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Mysore. He earned his Ph.D. from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in the field of Computer Science, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.

With over 31 years of teaching experience and one year of industry experience, he has served in various academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Information Science and Engineering Department and M.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering Coordinator. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Image Processing, Cloud Computing, Data Science, and Computer Networks. He has published research papers, authored academic books, guided numerous UG and PG projects, organized FDPs and workshops, and is a Life Member of ISTE. Also worked as a BOE and BoS member for various universities.
