About the department
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002 and is fully equipped with teaching and laboratory facilities. It is NBA-AICTE accredited, holds permanent affiliation, and VTU recognises it as a research centre.
Faculty here are engaged in research on aeroallergens, bacteriophages, bio-pollution, biofuels, phytochemical studies, tissue culture and fermentation technology. Seven projects are currently running, funded by DBT and DST of the Government of India, by AICTE and ICMR in New Delhi, and by KSCST and VGST of the Government of Karnataka. Students of the department have taken ranks from Visvesvaraya Technological University, and the department has organised seven national conferences, one international conference, faculty development programmes and six environment awareness workshops.

- 01To emphasize on technical learning of students to contribute their knowledge and expertise to the field of biotechnology and allied sciences in designing, developing and providing solutions for product / processes / technology development.
- 02To encourage the students to pursue higher education and research in reputed institutes at national and international level.
- 03To motivate students to be entrepreneurs, techno managers and leaders with strong communication skills and ethical values.
- 04To prepare employable ready students with personal integrity who are workforce in core biotech industries and domain based software services.

- 01To create platform for biotechnological techniques to manipulate living organisms for the benefit of mankind.
- 02To design, optimize, analyse and scale up processes to develop value added products.
- 03To generate, analyse and interpret biological data using in silico approaches.
Head of department

A gold medallist in her post-graduate studies and a GATE scholar, she took her PhD in biosciences at CSIR-CFTRI Mysore in 1999, followed by postdoctoral research in biochemistry at IISc Bangalore and in cancer biology at IIT Bombay.
Over 30 years of teaching and research have covered protein chemistry, fermentation technology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and environmental remediation; her work on biosurfactants has been acknowledged by the iGEM team at IIT Delhi. She has 35 peer-reviewed papers and over 500 citations, and has presented at more than 50 national and international forums. She is also a Carnatic veena artist.
