About the department
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 1979. It possesses state of the art facilities to cater to the needs of students. The department offers a UG programme in Civil Engineering (intake of 60), and PG programmes in Environmental Engineering (intake of 18) and Structural Engineering (intake of 24). The department has two research centres — the Environmental Engineering research centre and the Civil Engineering research centre — accommodating research scholars from various institutes and industries.
The department has well experienced, distinguished faculty with specialisation in the major areas of civil engineering, and provides civil engineering materials testing and consultancy services to government and semi-government agencies, contractors, construction industries and the public in and around Davanagere. Faculty members maintain good contact with reputed institutions and professional bodies, enabling the exchange of new technologies. The department is proud of its distinguished alumni doing excellent professional work at local and global levels. It is accredited by NBA in 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2021, and most recently for three years from 2024 to 2027.

Head of department

Dr. Chidananda G studied B.E. in Civil Engineering at Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET), Davanagere from 2003 to 2007, securing First rank and seven gold medals from VTU. He studied M.Tech. in Industrial Structures at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru, through the GATE quota from 2007 to 2009, again securing First rank. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from VTU in 2018, on the topic "Evaluation of Shear Strength of Longitudinally Reinforced Concrete Beams using Fracture Mechanics Approach," under the guidance of Dr. S Raviraj, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, SJCE, Mysuru.
He joined BIET in 2009 as Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, and is currently Professor and Head of the department as well as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, BIET. He has served the Institute as NBA coordinator, NAAC coordinator and IQAC coordinator, and is actively involved in the department's consultancy work. He has published research articles in journals, guided several UG and PG project students, and is currently guiding 5 Ph.D. research scholars.
