Four pillars

Every BIET undergraduate programme is organised around four pillars. The pillars determine sequencing and weight; the actual course list is decided by each branch's Board of Studies.

  1. IFoundational rigorThe first year is shared across branches and is unapologetically classical: mathematics, physics, chemistry, programming, engineering drawing, workshop. We do not 'apply' before students have built the foundation to apply from.
  2. IIBranch depthYears two and three are branch-immersive. Each programme has its own core sequence — five to six courses per semester that build cumulatively. Electives appear from the fifth semester, not before.
  3. IIIIndustry alignmentThe curriculum is reviewed annually with industry partners on each branch's Board of Studies. Course content that has gone stale is removed; emerging topics are introduced as electives first, core only after they survive two cycles of student feedback.
  4. IVCapstone autonomyThe final year is structured around a year-long capstone — typically with a real industry partner or research centre. Students spend more time on the capstone than on any single course.

Course coding

Course codes follow a three-letter-three-digit scheme. The letters indicate the offering branch (or HU/OE for general categories); the digits encode year and ordering within the year.

Curriculum review process

  1. Step 1Annual Board of Studies meeting per branch — held in May
  2. Step 2External industry reviewer attends each Board (rotates yearly)

Information Science & Engineering

Established in 2000 with an initial intake of 60 students, the department has expanded its capacity to 180 seats. Over the last two decades, it has graduated more than 2,200 students, with learning facilitated through its dedicated laboratories and library.

A founding 1979 department. Intake has climbed from thirty seats to 120, final-year pass rates hold above 95 per cent, and its students have taken 35 university ranks.

Running since 1979 and accredited three times by the NBA, with VTU research-centre status since 2009. Laboratories cover machines, power systems, control, high voltage and relays.

Mechanical Engineering

The oldest engineering department here, teaching since 1979. Intake doubled to 120 on demand from industry, and it runs both a research centre and a product development cell.

Established in 1979 and parent to both of the institute's civil PG programmes. Two research centres, plus a testing and consultancy practice serving agencies around Davanagere.

Chemical Engineering

Teaching since 1996 at an intake of thirty. Around 480 graduates so far, at least one university rank in every year, and eleven laboratories across a 2,000 m² block.

Textile Technology

Textile Technology trains for an industry in the middle of rapid change. The department takes “Work is worship” as its stated philosophy and measures itself against it.

Biotechnology

Established in 2002, NBA accredited and recognised by VTU as a research centre. Seven funded projects run here, across aeroallergens, bacteriophages, biofuels and tissue culture.
