The Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology was established in the academic year 1979-1980 and came in to being on 1st September 1979. Department of Physics, which was one of the very few earliest departments, started functioning on the same day itself with four senior staff from sister institutes and Prof. M.S. Devendrappa, HOD as the founder faculty. In the beginning the laboratory facilities of DRM Science College were utilized. In the academic year 1983-84 the independent laboratory was temporarily established in Workshop complex. Later the laboratory was shifted to BIET Boys’ hostel premises. In the year 1986, a complete independent laboratory with all the ultramodern sophisticated equipment and facilities required to train the Engineering students and carry out Research activities was established in the Science and Textile Block I-floor, with a floor area of 2700 Sq.ft. The staff members of the department put hard efforts to train the students, which is very well demonstrated in the overall result in both theory and laboratory subjects. Presently the department is working with six faculty members with two doctorates.
Vision
To integrate science and technology as a foundation for excellence and encourage the development by providing the fundamental scientific and technical knowledge about physical phenomena as a professional course in engineering and technology.
Mission
- Enabling the students to discover their talents both in theory and practical, through dedication to teach, innovative instructional methods and working models.
- Working closely with other faculties of different discipline that will eminence the value of institution.
- To develop organizational skills, core competence and ethics in first year engineering students that they need, as true professional for achieving success in life.
SWOT
a) Strength
- 85% of faculty in the department are doctorates.
- Faculty members have good research collaborations with reputed institutions at national and international level.
- Faculties have expertise in the field of Non-linear optics Nanomaterials, crystallography, for energy storage, sensing and single crystals for NLO applications and also theoretical research work on mathematical bio-modelling and department have good number of publications in high impact journals.
b) Weakness
- Need to improvise the research facilities (Linear optical studies, TGA/DSC, Microhardness).
- Not having sponsored projects
c) Opportunities
- Demand for training program and consultancy
- Strengthening the scope for improving research collaboration
- It is planned to submit the research proposals for international collaborations for funding during the academic year 2023-24.
d) Threats
- Decline in admissions to PhD program
- Increased competency for the funded projects
