The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002, and it is full-fledged with state-of-the-art teaching & laboratory facilities. The NBA-AICTE accredited the department and VTU, Belgaum recognized department as a research center and had received permanent affiliation. The department has experienced and learned faculties and engaged in research activities on Aeroallergens, Bacteriophages, Bio-pollution, Bio-fuels, Phyto-chemical Studies, Tissue culture, fermentation technology, etc. Currently there are 7 research projects ongoing funded by DBT, DST, Govt. of India, AICTE, ICMR, New Delhi, KSCST, VGST, Govt. of Karnataka. The students of Biotechnology Department have bagged ranks from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The department also organized seven National Conferences, one International Conference, FDP's, Six Environment Awareness workshops.

To impart quality education for translating knowledge to the widest domains and create distinctive knowledge assets that contribute in crafting a pool of young engineers to meet the demands of industry and society, through excellence in technical education and research.

Classroom

The department has well furnished classrooms and seminar rooms to facilitate learning, discussions and outcome oriented learning. The specially designed classrooms are equipped with LCD projector & offer internet connectivity to enhance the learning process. It is used for conducting classes, presentations & webinars. The classrooms provide a very conducive environment for effective learning and objective is to provide students a hands-on experience and the right ambiance to stimulate learning. Spacious seminar hall is equipped with LCD projector and internet connectivity. The room can comfortably seat 110 people and is used for conducting classes, seminars and distinguished lectures.

Department Library

The library serves as a central organ of academic activity in the Department. The Department has a rich & vast collection of around 500 books, covering all disciplines of science, engineering, technology, humanities & social sciences. It also has one copy each of all BE projects, Seminar reports and Ph.D. dissertations carried out in the department in recent years. All these cater to the needs of students and faculty. The library serves to provide a calm and cosy ambience conductive to long hours of study. The library opens on all working days of the Institute from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Dr. Ashish A Prabhu

Dr. Ashish Prabhu, an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2007-2011, Visvesvaraya Technological University and Masters degree in Industrial biotechnology from Manipal Institute of Technology, India. During his masters he worked on the project entitled “Bioprocessing of rice bran as a functional food ingredient” at Central Food Technological Research Institute Mysore, India. He secured top ranking in his post-graduation and bagged a gold medal. Besides, he also qualified GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering) with 91 Percentile in biotechnology division. Ashish obtained his PhD (Biochemical Engineering) in 2018 from the Department of biosciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. His doctoral research primarily focused on engineering methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris and optimizes the process in shake flask as well as reactor scale to produce a high titer of human interferon gamma. Subsequently, he also worked on engineering of other GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) organisms such as Bacillus, K.lactis and E.coli for the production of therapeutic proteins/Enzymes. Post PhD he joined Tata Institute of Genetics and Society, Bangalore, India, where he worked on production of malarial antigen and Single chain antibody in E.coli and Insect cell lines. Later he joined as Research Fellow in Metabolic Engineering, Center for climate and environmental protection in Cranfield university, United Kingdom. Where he worked on engineering of oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica for the production of value added products such as xylitol and succinic acid using renewable carbon sources such as sugarcane bagasse hydrolysate and crude glycerol. Currently he is working as Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology, National Institute of Technology Warangal. Dr Ashish has specialization in bioprocess and metabolic engineering of microbial cell factories for the production of biological products at high titer in reactor scale. He is interested in developing second generation biorefinery by utilizing renewable sources. Currently his research focused on. Pathway manipulation of cell factories for sustainable growth and production on renewable carbon sources. Optimization of process parameters in bioreactor level for maximizing the productivity of platform chemical commodities. Developing the mathematical models to understand the genotype-phenotype relationship of cell factories. He has published 41 research articles in journals of international reputation and also has 7 book chapters.

Amulya Shastry

Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of health

Amulya Shastry, is an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2011-2015. Amulya Shastry recently graduated from North-eastern University with a master’s degree in Bioinformatics.I am delighted to inform you that I have secured a position as a Bioinformatics Scientist at the National Institutes of health. I will be working for the microbiome core at the NIAID. I wanted to thank you and all the professors of the biotechnology department for the immense support and guidance. This would not have been possible without your constant effort towards the betterment of biotech department which gave me an opportunity to mend my skills.

Shaman S. Shetty

Captain, Indian Army

Captain Shaman S. Shetty is an alumni of Dept. of Biotechnology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davangere of the batch 2012-2016. After successful completion of degree he appeared for UPSC examinations. Finally secured 33 AIR in NCC entry and got selected for training at Officers Training Academy, Chennai as an Indian army officer. On successful completion of training from OTA, Chennai he was commissioned in infantry as attachment in Counter Insurgency areas of Arunachal Pradesh. He was awarded G-O-C in C commendation card Eastern command for carrying out successful operations in the counter insurgency areas with all his men safe back to the HQ’s in the year 2018. Currently Captain Shaman S. Shetty is posted in Ladakh in High Altitude Areas.

  • NCC cadet Shashirekha R (4BD16BT022) 6th SEM, have been participated in basic mountaineering course in abvimas at manali and also she completed B & C certificate exam.

  • NCC cadet Sushmita Jois (4BD16BT026) 6th SEM, have been participated in basic mountaineering course in abvimas at manali and also she completed B & C certificate exam

  • Kiran maddinmath (4BD16BT011) 6th sem, member of NSS BIET Davangere, got selected for the KarGoa selection SSB training held at Gwalior Madhya Pradesh. And also she completed B & C certificate exam

  • Aishwarya P.M (4BD16BT028) 6th sem ,participated in the PG special Workshop on “ Advancements in Biological Sciences & its Applications” organized by KSTA,DST, GoK, Bengaluru during 29-30 March 2019 and got consolation prize

  • Sushmita jois has participated Voice for BT on Dec 6th 2019 at VIT Vellore Tamilnadu.

  • Alfiya & Soujanya stood 2nd place in the regional finals of Bio quiz 2019, held as part of INDIABIO@BENGALURU TECH SUMMIT 2019

  • Pooja & Ksheera J J stood 3rdplace in the regional finals of Bio quiz 2019, held as part of INDIABIO@BENGALURU TECH SUMMIT 2019.

Forum Activities

BioTechnology FORUM (BTFORUM)

The following events are conducted regularly by BTForum:

Hands on training - Trends in Biotechnology, 15th -21st January 2018 A hands-on training on Trends in biotechnology related areas like, Sample Analysis using instruments like PCR, ELISA, HPLC,Fermentor, Gel Doc, Lyophilizer etc, Forensic Science, Molecular Biology, Immunotechnology, Agricultural Bioetchnology and Aerobiology has been conducted to the BE-Biotech students of VTU affiliated Enngineering colleges across the state. The participants limit was 50.
3. National seminar on new trends in Biotechnology & 14th conference of society of Cytologist & Geneticists,6th -8th March 2019 The event was inaugurated by Padmashree Dr. M.R.S. Rao, Honorary Professor and Former President, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore at S.S Mallikarjuna Cultural Center, BIET on 6th March 2019. The occasion was graced by Dr. R.C.Verma, Former Vice Chancellor, Vikram University, Madhya Pradesh & President, Society of Cytologists and Geneticists, Dr. B.H.M Nijalingappa, Vice President SOCG, Bangalore, Dr. M.C Gayathri, Secretary, SOCG, Bangalore, Dr.B.S Prasad, Principal, SSIMS&RC, Prof. Y .Vrushabhendrappa, Director, BIET, Dr. H.B Aravinda, Principal, BIET. On the second day of the programme, along with technical sessions and oral/poster presentations, a special public talk was arranged in the evening at 6:30 PM and was delivered by H. Ramakrishnaiah, Ph D., ARPS (Royal Society, London), EFIAP (France) a renowned & International Award Winning Photographer on “Wild Encounters – Art & Beyond”. On day three, as a part of the event BIOMARCH, a jatha was organized to sensitize the public to create awareness on “Biotechnology for sustainability in agriculture, Health, Environment” at 6 AM.
4. Bio-Entrepreneur’s Summit Bio-Entrepreneur’s Summit was organized and inaugurated by Dr. Ajay Gupta, Senior President, Grasim Industries Ltd. Kumarapatnam, Harihar. A Panel Discussion on “Bio-Entrepreneurial Opportunities” was arranged and as panelists, Dr. S. Chandrashekaran, Managing Director, Genie Labs, Bangalore, Sri. Prasad Patil, Founder & CEO, Aissels Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Hubli. Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Director & Head, Bangalore Bio-innovation Centre. Sri. Nivedan Nempe, Founder, Areca Tea and CEO Mystic Aromatics. Mr. Gourishankar Karoshi, Founder Yogi Farm, Dharwad were present and interacted with the participants.
5.   • Mr. Deepak Hiremath, Alumnus of Biotechnology delivered a talk on “Career opportunities & higher studies in Biotechnology” on 16th Aug 2017

  • Dr. Anu Appaiah, Principal Scientist, CFTRI Mysuru invited as a Chief Guest to inaugurate Biolit Forum activities 2017-2018 and Welcome to 3rd Semester Students and he delivered a talk on “Agro Waste- What needs to be done?” held on 29th Aug 2017

  • As part of Forum of Biotechnologists activities, the Brain Storm Debate competition was on current issues from Aug- Nov 2017

  • R & D Cell, BIET, Davangere organized “World Ozone Day – 2017” sponsored by Karnataka Science & Technology Academy, Gov. of Karnataka, inaugurated by Padmashree Dr. S.K. Shivakumar, Chairman KSTA, Bangalore and Chief Guests are Dr. H. Ramakrishnaiah, Prof., Maharani’s College for Women, Bengalore, Dr. B.C.Nagaraj, Department of Environmental Science, Bangalore University, Bangalore, held on 16th sept 2017.

  • As part of Forum of Biotechnologist activities, Dr. B.G Pujar, Visiting Professor in Dept of Biotechnology delivered a special talk on “The World in 2050” for all Biotechnology students on 13th Nov 2017

  • Dr. M. R. S. Rao, Padmashree, Awardee delivered a talk on “Human Genome Sequence” on 14th Dec 2017 at Dept. of Biotechnology, BIET, Davangere.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a one-week-long hands-on workshop on “Trends in Biotechnology” from January 15th – 21st 2018.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a one-day Lecture Programme on “Strides in Biotechnology” for the students on 19th February 2018. In this program, a Panel discussion on “Scope and Career Opportunities in Biotechnology” was arranged exclusively for PU students from different colleges in around Davangere

  • The dept. of Biotechnology had arranged a farewell party for the outgoing batch of BT Students (2014-2018) on 6th June 2018.

  • Dr. Suchit from the Center for Cellular & Molecular Platforms, Bangalore delivered an invited talk on “Applying for Research Grants & Patents” on 1st August 2018.

  • The Dept. of Biotechnology organized Inauguration of the Activities of BIOLIT -‘Forum of Biotechnologists’ for the Academic year 2018-19 & Welcome to 3rd Semester Students on 24th august 2018 at 10:40 AM. Dr. B. E. Rangaswamy, Prof.& Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, Dean, R&D, BIET, presided the programme and as Chief guests Dr. Vedamurthy A.B., Prof.& Head, Department of Biotechnology, Karnatak University-Dharwad and Dr. N. Haraprasad, Deputy Registrar, J. S. S. Science and Technology University, Mysore were present. Prof. Y. Vrushabhendrappa, Director, BIET, Davangere, Dr. S. Subrahmanya Swamy, Principal, BIET, Davangere have graced the occasion.

  • Smitha Devigere, an alumnus of our department delivered a talk on “Opportunities in Biotechnology” on 10th October 2018.

  • Ramesh Kaza, Sr. Managing Director, Chief Information Officer, State Street corporation Services Pvt, Ltd, Hyderabad delivered a talk on “ Communication Skills” at the department on 13-10-2018.

  • The Department has organized “Parent-Teacher Meet 2018-2019” by inviting parents of BT students on 27th November 2018.

  • The Department of Biotechnology, BIET, Davangere hosted the farewell program for the outgoing batch (2015-19) on 17 May 2019. Sri Gokul Badgujar, Head, Engineering Division of Projects, Cargill India Pvt Ltd. Belludi, Harihar had graced the occasion as chief guest.

  • The department has arranged an inauguration of BIOLIT activities for the year 2019-2020 and a welcome programme for the 3rd -semester students on 29/08/2019. Dr. Gourishankar, Professor & Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, SIT, Tumkur was invited as chief guest for the programme.

  • The department has arranged an inauguration of BIOLIT activities for the year 2020-2021 and a welcome program for the 3rd-semester students on 23/01/2020. Dr. Ramakrishnan M S, Vice President (R&D), Biocora Therapeutics, Biocon Limited Bangalore was invited virtually as chief guest for the programme.
